SUBJECT: Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic work collaboratively to offer new admissions route for Newfoundland and Labrador students

A recent successful collaboration between Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic (CNA) is a new admissions route for Newfoundland and Labrador students. The request to add a new category of admissions to Memorial University’s Calendar was approved at the December Senate meeting. The new category of admissions is for applicants who successfully complete College of the North Atlantic’s one-year Comprehensive Arts and Science Transition Certificate program (CAS Transition program).
In the fall 2009 semester, 306 applicants who followed the high school curriculum of Newfoundland and Labrador did not meet the requirements for final admission to Memorial University. Some limited options currently available to these students include the university’s Summer Bridging program, completion of courses through an approved Adult Basic Education program, or waiting several years to apply for admission under the mature student category.
Both Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic have been responsive in trying to work together to serve this particular group of students.
“This collaboration demonstrates the positive and continuing level of cooperation between the Memorial University and College of the North Atlantic,” said Dr. Christopher W. Loomis, president and vice chancellor pro tempore of Memorial University. “ This initiative is one more way we are working together to better serve the students of our province by offering them increased opportunities and access to post-secondary education at both of our institutions.”
The CAS Transition program meets the needs of high school and Adult Basic Education graduates who are looking to improve their admission requirements for further post-secondary options or improve general employability skills. The program is designed to give students the opportunity to build on academic skills and improve learning habits and strategies needed to succeed in post-secondary programs.
“We have had a number of success stories come from our CAS Transition program since its introduction in 2005,” said Jean Madill, president of College of the North Atlantic. “And now, by partnering with Memorial University, we have significantly increased the number of students that will benefit from this worthwhile program. We believe everyone should have the opportunity to explore their post-secondary options and this initiative shows the commitment by both institutions in providing those opportunities.”
The CAS Transition program was first introduced as a pilot project in 2005. It is currently offered at nine CNA campuses throughout the province, including the first time this year in St. John’s and Corner Brook, making it accessible to rural and urban students. The college has found that grads of this program have been successful in subsequent programs.

CNA also offers a transfer year, Comprehensive Arts and Science Transfer: College-University, program that allows students to transfer their credits onto a degree program with Memorial University. The CAS Transfer: College-University program offers a suite of first-year university equivalent courses that are transferable after completing first year at CNA.
