SUBJECT: Memorial business student receives $10,000 scholarship

The new year has started off right for Kasey Chaulk, a Memorial bachelor of commerce student who recently found out that she is a recipient of the Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies. The $10,000 scholarship is awarded in recognition of strong academic standing, entrepreneurial interest, extracurricular and community activities, and career aspirations.
Ms. Chaulk is a fifth-year student currently studying abroad at Esdes Universite Catholique de Lyon, in Lyon, France. Ms. Chaulk said she was delighted to win the scholarship. “With this scholarship I feel like a big weight has been lifted from my shoulders; it’s an unbelievable gift. It has helped me fund most of my exchange to France and this will be one of the only semesters since coming to Memorial that I won’t have to hold a job on the side.”
Ms. Chaulk is responsible for reviving Memorial University’s Student Marketing Society and serves as co-chair. In fall 2009, the society launched a workshop called NET2WORK that helps students develop networking skills and prepare for careers. She is a co-author of a research paper that was accepted and presented at the Administrative Sciences Association of Canada Conference in the spring of 2009. Ms. Chaulk aspires to open her own marketing agency in Halifax named The Chaulk Board.
Dr. Wilfred Zerbe, dean of the Faculty of Business Administration, said the entire faculty is proud of Ms. Chaulk’s achievement. “Between her academic achievements, revitalization of the Marketing Society and research contribution, Kasey is an active member of the Faculty of Business Administration, and the Sobey scholarship is a fitting recognition for her accomplishments,” he said. “The faculty has benefitted from her initiative, ambition and enthusiasm, and I sincerely congratulate her on this well-deserved honour.”
The Frank H. Sobey Awards for Excellence in Business Studies are presented annually to six exceptional business students in Atlantic Canada. Since their establishment in 1989, more than $760,000 has been awarded to business students in the four Atlantic provinces.
