SUBJECT: Medical students organize black tie event to raise money for Haiti

Six weeks have passed since the devastating earthquake which rocked the island nation of Haiti, but MUN medical school students believe the need for support and solidarity is as great as ever. Satin, Suits, Solidarity a black-tie event in support of Haiti, is being hosted this Saturday by the MUN Med Student’s Society and the Faculty of Medicine.
The event will connect guests to Haiti in a variety of way. There will be a silent auction featuring items crafted by Haitian artisans from the Comité Artisanal Haïtien. The line up of guest speakers includes Justin Brake, a freelance journalist recently returned from Haiti, Bill Hynd, Oxfam Canada’s national campaigns coordinator, and Dr. Monica Kidd, director of the documentary Narrating Haiti.
Event co-ordinator Chris Mong, a second-year med school student, believes this is a cause the medical community needs to support. “Though the United Nations has declared the emergency phase of relief over, the need to remain in solidarity with the Haitian people is stronger than ever,” he says. He hopes that the event will “continue the incredible financial support and emotional solidarity that Newfoundlanders have given to Haiti thus far.”
Proceeds are going to Haiti Village Health (www.haitivillagehealth.ca) and The Humanitarian Coalition (www.humanitariancoalition.com). Starting at
7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 27, the event will happen at the Johnson GEO CENTRE. Tickets are $25 for students and $35 for professionals and the general public; these can be purchased at the door or at the Faculty of Medicine’s Student Affairs Office (HSC 2713).
