SUBJECT: Marine Institute takes part in National Science and Technology Week

DATE: October 9, 2009

The Fisheries and Marine Institute (MI) of Memorial University of Newfoundland has two events planned to celebrate National Science and Technology Week.
MI presents Aquaculture: Farming the Waters on Oct. 19 at 12:30 p.m. at the Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture and Seafood Development (CASD) at the Marine Institute’s Ridge Road campus. MI will host an open house tour of CASD’s aquaculture facilities, during which students and industry groups are invited to take part in aquaculture demonstrations. Visitors will also have opportunities to talk with MI instructors and researchers about how they are working to sustain fisheries in Atlantic Canada through training, industrial and applied research and education.
On Oct. 21 the Marine Institute hosts an open house of its new Atlantic Canada Fishery By-Products Research Centre on Mount Scio Rd. in St. John’s from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Students and industry groups will have the chance to learn how CASD is using the latest research and techniques to improve the aquatic health of various fish species and can experience how the centre is using innovative research and development to encourage commercial fisheries by-product utilization.
“In the spirit of National Science and Technology Week, these events are designed to encourage children and young adults to engage in science and technology, interact with our professional faculty and staff and visit our world-class facilities,” said Glenn Blackwood, executive director, Marine Institute. “We hope that our open houses and other events associated with National Science and Technology Week encourage young people to consider science and technology as career choices.”
National Science and Technology Week begins on Oct. 16 and continues until Oct. 25. To learn more, visit www.science.gc.ca/nstw.
