SUBJECT: Grenfell: Grenfell student joins the fight against cystic fibrosis

DATE: August 31, 2010

Nahyelie Burn is looking to Grenfell and surrounding communities to raise $3,000 for cystic fibrosis.
Earlier this year the Grenfell English student had the opportunity to attend the National Shinerama Conference in Ontario. There, Ms. Burn, who hails from Orange Walk Town, Belize, learned about the organization and how to go about arranging a fundraising campaign.
Shinerama is the largest fundraiser held at Canada’s post-secondary institutions, involving students from more than 65 universities and colleges. The campaign, which began in 1964, has raised almost $19.6 million to help fund CF research and treatment programs. In September, more than 35,000 students in Canada will participate in Shinerama. Grenfell’s nursing students have been active in the Shinerama movement for many years, holding fundraisers and shining shoes on campus and in the community.
Several of the activities Ms. Burn is organizing will be rolled out in conjunction with Western Regional School of Nursing.
“Shine Day” will be Sept. 17, which will involve a number of different fundraising events. A penny drive will also take place throughout the Shinerama period; anyone with a penny collection or any other donations should contact Ms. Burn at nburn@swgc.mun.ca or 630-7055. People can also make donations at Ms. Burn’s Grenfell-Shinerama webpage, http://my.e2rm.com/personalPage.aspx?registrationID=926003.
