SUBJECT: Grenfell: Artist Reed Weir visiting Grenfell College

Artist Reed Weir is visiting the Visual Arts Program at Grenfell College on Thursday, Nov. 12 and Friday, Nov. 13 as part of the Canada Council Visiting Artist Program. She will deliver a public lecture TONIGHT, Nov. 12, at 7 p.m. in Room 224 of the Fine Arts Building.
Weir is a Newfoundland artist who has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her figurative ceramic works conjure real bodies, minstrels and the world of commedia dell'arte. There are echoes of animism and the dualism of reality in the work: scarcity/abundance, innocence/hardship. She is a self-employed Newfoundland artist who has made a conscious commitment to working in a rural context and addressing rural issues. For example her recent body of work, The Flood at Furnace Cove, combines motifs of water, rural life and cataclysm, exploring themes of upheaval, transformation and the loss of community. The figures in her stoneware sculptures are standing in the floodwaters of a cultural transformation. They are modelled from the viewpoint of the people maintaining place during a period of irrevocable change. The violent and sudden destruction caused by the flood is a metaphor for the slow and deliberate de population of Newfoundland's rural communities.
