SUBJECT: Business process improvement course offered at Lifelong Learning

A course offered through the Division of Lifelong Learning and dedicated to maximizing employee performance and enhancing problem-solving skills in the business sector is currently taking applicants.
Six Sigma Green Belt training, a continuous improvement business strategy originally developed by American telecommunications company Motorola, is proven to result in financial savings, improved quality of product or service, development of staff skills and quality control recognition.
The course runs from Wednesday, Feb. 10 to March 10, from 7–10 p.m., plus Saturday, March 20 and 27, from 1–4 p.m. for a total of seven classes. It will be facilitated by Dr. Hasnain Rizvi and costs $329.
“Six Sigma Green Belt certification helps the employee serve as a trained team member within his or her function-specific area of the organization,” said Dr. Rizvi. “The course is for employees requiring a standardized approach to problem solving for the purpose of continuous improvement. This would include team leaders, supervisors and associates.”
The Green Belt has two primary tasks. The first is to help successfully deploy Six Sigma techniques, and second, to lead small-scale improvement projects within their respective areas. During the training participants learn how to use many of the Six Sigma problem-solving methods and tools to contribute to the success of the organization – based on the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve and control) model.
“The great thing about Six Sigma is that it is perfect for all businesses, whether you are a large corporation producing a product or a small business that specializes in customer service,” said Dr. Rizvi. “Six Sigma Training will help your business improve productivity and increase the bottom line. It is a very flexible program that gets everyone working together towards one common goal: improving the quality of whatever you produce, thus improving your company’s profitability.”
Materials for the course will be provided by the instructor, and is included in the price of the course fee. In terms of examinations, the course is heavily focused on the greenbelt certification process, so upon completion of the course participants will be well equipped to write the exam.
The exam is a separate fee, and registration for the exam is completed online through the American Society for Quality website. Examinations are held in St. John’s twice a year, once in December and the second in the either April or May.
