SUBJECT: Grenfell: Western Regional School of Nursing receives highest accreditation award

Western Regional School of Nursing was recently awarded a seven-year accreditation by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing Accreditation Bureau.
“This is the highest possible award,” said Linda Norman-Robbins, director, Western Regional School of Nursing. “This is the gold standard issued by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing. Everyone here worked very hard to attain this award – this means that our school is of the highest caliber in the country.”
In St. John’s, WRSON’s counterparts, the Memorial School of Nursing and the Centre for Nursing Studies, also received a seven-year award.
According to the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing, its accreditation bureau aims to “assure Canadians of excellence in nursing by assessing the extent to which learning institutions have achieved standards of excellence in nursing education, and by making recommendations so that schools can use this guidance to find their own ways to improve.”
“Accreditation is recognized around the world as a way to measure objectively the way we are developing and delivering programs and serving the public,” said Ms. Norman-Robbins.
The CASN accreditation program includes policies, procedures and standards which are used by the school to complete a self-study. The self-study is complemented by an on-site peer review. A review team report is prepared for the school, which prepares a school response. The review team report and school response are reviewed together by the CASN Accreditation Bureau to determine the decision regarding the school’s accreditation status.
An event to celebrate the accreditation award is being planned this fall for all students, staff, faculty and key stakeholders/partners.
