SUBJECT: Grenfell: Grenfell prof finds China experience professionally rewarding, culturally enriching and personally gratifying

DATE: December 17, 2008

Associate professor Sudhir Abhyankar of Grenfell’s Division of Science was the sole Newfoundland and Labrador representative in a Canadian chemistry delegation to China.
The Canadian delegation of chemists, chemical engineers and chemical technologists had representation from all provinces except Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan.
Dr. Abhyankar, associate professor of chemistry in Grenfell’s environmental science program, was invited by the faculty of chemistry at the Guangxi Normal University to give a formal lecture/presentation on “Green chemistry in undergraduate chemical education.”
The Canadian delegation held a number of professional meetings with their Chinese counterparts from industries, universities and research institutions, with information exchanges on global sustainable development and the responsible use of resources. Members also had an opportunity to tour research and teaching laboratory facilities which were second to none.
“I was quite impressed with the way in which the Chinese have integrated teaching and research at the universities we visited,” said Dr. Abhyankar.
The cultural exchanges included learning about the brief history and geography of China, the way of life of Chinese people, and some social and economical aspects of Chinese society.
“This was truly an awesome experience,” said Dr. Abhyankar.
Some of the cultural understanding was gained by visiting national monuments such as Tia’anmen Square, the Great Wall of China, Imperial Palace (the Forbidden City), Shanghai Museum and a farmer’s house in rural China.
