SUBJECT: Grenfell: Grenfell College community saddened by news of death of longtime supporter

DATE: March 9, 2009

The Grenfell community learned today of the passing of Memorial University honorary graduate and longtime Grenfell College supporter Justice P. Lloyd Soper.
Dr. Soper, who passed away in St. John’s Friday morning, was a familiar face on the Corner Brook campus. He frequently attended events such as scholarship receptions and was genuinely interested in the lives of Grenfell’s students, faculty and staff.
“We’ve kept in touch with Dr. Soper since his move to St. John’s, and he has never failed to respond to our communications,” said Dr. Holly Pike, acting principal, Grenfell College. “His financial contributions to Grenfell and Memorial over the years have been very generous, but even more important to us were his genuine interest in everything that was going on at Grenfell and his pleasure in and support for our achievements and development. We will miss Dr. Soper very much and feel the deepest sympathy for his family.”
Dr. Soper graduated from the former Memorial College (Parade Street campus) in 1940. He was named Alumnus of the Year in 1995. His most public contribution to Sir Wilfred Grenfell College was the establishment of the Honorable P. Lloyd and Elizabeth Soper Scholarship in 1994. The scholarship is awarded annually to a student who has completed his or her first year of studies and is continuing as a full-time student at the Corner Brook campus for the second year. Dr. Soper rarely missed an opportunity to attend Grenfell’s scholarship receptions, and was always eager to meet the students whom he supported through the scholarship.
In addition, Dr. Soper often made donations to other activities on campus, such as the college’s outreach publication Grenfell Connects and the On-campus Student Foodbank.
Memorial University’s flags will be lowered on Monday, March, 9, to mark the passing of Dr. Soper. The funeral service will take place at Gower St. United Church in St. John’s on Monday, March, 9. Visitation will take place at Barrett’s Funeral Home in St. John’s on Saturday, March, 7, from 7-9 p.m. and Sunday, March, 8, from 2-4 p.m.
