SUBJECT: Grenfell: Ferris Hodgett Library is all a-Twitter

DATE: March 30, 2009

Grenfell College students can now follow the Ferriss Hodgett Library on Twitter.
What is Twitter, you ask? According to twitter.com, “Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent messages. People write short updates, often called "tweets" of 140 characters or fewer. These messages are posted to your profile, sent to your followers, and are searchable on Twitter search.”
“Twitter is a social networking site, similar to Facebook, but a Twitter profile is smaller and simpler. You mainly use it to post short messages,” said Crystal Rose, public services librarian. “The updates, or “tweets,” are like text messages that are online for anyone to see. People can also text their updates to Twitter from their cell phone, which is an especially popular feature.”
Twitter is a rapidly growing phenomenon, and many students and faculty are already using it.

Dr. Michael Newton, religious studies professor at Grenfell, is a Twitter fan.
“It is most useful for receiving constant news and information updates as they are happening,” said Dr. Newton, adding he is currently following the CBC, the David Suzuki Foundation, as well as cyclists Lance Armstrong and Dave Zabriskie, among others.
