SUBJECT: Changes at the Faculty of Arts

As Dr. Reeta Tremblay has accepted the position of vice-president academic (pro-tempore) for an unspecified period (due to Dr. Chris Loomis being appointed to the position of president, pro tempore, on July 1, 2009), that has left a vacancy in the Dean of Arts office.
The Board of Regents of Memorial University has approved the appointment of Dr. Noel Roy as the acting dean of the Faculty of Arts.
Dr. Reeta Tremblay became Memorial’s Dean of Arts in August 2006. While dean she has been very active on a number of fronts, including developing a unique and distinct identity for the Faculty of Arts at Memorial. Most notably she has focused on the development of new disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs with a global perspective and reinforced the Faculty of Arts strong commitment to both cutting edge research and innovative teaching. Prior to her move to St. John's, she was a political science professor at Concordia University in Montreal.
Dr. Roy's appointment as Head of the Economics Department was due to end on August 31. “I was really looking forward to pending the next year on administrative leave, because I had to put a lot of research ideas on the back burner while I was department head. But I received a lot of encouragement to put my name forward, both from people who know me and from people who know the position. It's a big step up from having to focus on only one discipline, but I'm looking forward to the challenge,” said Dr. Roy.
Dr. Roy is an accomplished scholar in the economy of Newfoundland and Canadian Fisheries, and has been the head of the Economics department for the past six years. He has served in various administrative positions in the university during his career at Memorial, including three years as president of MUNFA.
“Noel will make an excellent acting dean, coming as he does from a background in both academia and administration. I am confident that the entire Faculty of Arts, including faculty, staff, and students will be as generous with him as they have been with me over the past three years. I wish him all the best in his new position,” said Dr. Tremblay.
