This fall marks the 20th season of full-scale productions mounted by the theatre program at Memorial University’s Sir Wilfred Grenfell Campus in Corner Brook.
In celebration of this milestone, the theatre program is presenting a particularly exciting bill that runs the gamut from intrigue and seduction to riotous comedy and powerful tragedy.
The season opens on Oct. 31 with Christopher Hampton’s international award-winning drama of sexual intrigue, betrayal, seduction and death set in pre revolutionary 18th-century France, Les Liaisons Dangereuses. Originally produced by The Royal Shakespeare Company, it went on to play around the world and produced two different film versions: Dangerous Liaisons and Valmont. The production features students from the fourth, third and second years of the program and is directed by guest artist Jerry Etienne (former artistic director of Theatre . Then at the end of November it’s all Shakespeare and all about hormones! Young love at its most hilarious and most tragic is explored in Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream and his most romantic tragedy Romeo and Juliet. Both plays will feature students from across the program as well as guest appearances by Jerry Etienne, Paddy Monaghan and Ken Jacobsen and will also be designed by Renate Pohl and Carol Nelson. A Midsummer Night’s Dream is directed by visiting professor Adam Nashman and Romeo and Juliet is directed by fine arts head, Ken Livingstone. The Shakespeare productions will alternate nightly from November 28 - December 1. and his most romantic tragedy .
