SUBJECT: PSA: Dr. Nigel Rusted Lecture in the Medical Humanities

The topic for the 2007 Dr. Nigel Rusted Lecture in the Medical Humanities is the discovery of sickle cell anemia.
The lecture takes place Friday, Oct. 26 in the main auditorium of the Faculty of Medicine from noon to 1 p.m. Dr. Todd Savittt’s illustrated talk, “Western Medicine Discovers Sickle Cell Anemia (1919-1911): A Story of Race, Medicine, and Scientific Authorship” discusses the first two case histories of sickle cell anemia against the backdrop of a racially divided America and a highly competitive scientific community. Dr. Savitt teaches history and medical ethics at the Department of Medical Humanities, East Carolina University School of Medicine.
