SUBJECT: MUN Brass Quintet to present concerts and workshops in Labrador West

A brass quintet from Memorial University’s School of Music will travel to Labrador to present a series of educational concerts and workshops for students in Labrador West this week. The tour is sponsored by Northern Soundscapes, a partnership between Memorial’s School of Music and the Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) which was designed in 2006 to help enhance cultural and music opportunities for school-aged students in Labrador West. The MUN Brass Quintet is the fourth group from MUN to travel to Labrador under the auspices of this program. It will be in the area April 21-25.
The quintet will present a series of concerts designed to introduce young audiences to the instruments of the brass family and how they work, and to give students a taste of the enormous variety of music that is available to the modern brass quintet. In addition to standard quintet fare such as Malcolm Arnold’s Quintet for Brass and Victor Ewald’s Quintet no. 1, the ensemble will perform J.S. Bach’s Little Fugue in G minor, as well as an assortment of familiar tunes ranging from Frere Jacques and This Old Man to the big band standard, That’s a Plenty by Lew Pollack.
The members of the MUN Brass Quintet are Emily Thompson and Heidi Adams, trumpet; Jill Abbott, horn; Philip Holloway, trombone; and Jonathan Rowsell, tuba. All five are busy musicians who, in addition to participating in a number of ensembles at Memorial, are also active in the larger St. John’s musical community, performing regularly with such groups as the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra, Gower Youth Band, and the Salvation Army. The MUN Brass Quintet was formed in the fall of 2007 under the direction of Dr. Karen Bulmer, assistant professor of low brass.
