SUBJECT: Memorial University to hold Dec. 6 Vigil

Students, faculty and staff will pause and reflect during a special ceremony on Memorial University of Newfoundland’s St. John’s campus next week.
Memorial’s Dec. 6 Vigil ceremonies will commemorate the tragic anniversary of 1989’s Montreal Massacre when 14 women were killed at l’École Polytechnique in Montreal, Quebec. The service will also focus attention on the broader issue of violence against women.
It coincides with the 16th anniversary of the establishment of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women by the federal government.
The vigil is organized annually by Memorial’s Sexual Harassment Office and the Department of Women’s Studies.
This year’s event will include special readings as well as a student candlelight procession.
The vigil will be emceed by Kate Bride, a PhD candidate in the Faculty of Education at Memorial and a lecturer in the Department of Women's Studies.
The ceremony will also include a performance by cellist Dr. Nathan Cook, a faculty member from the School of Music.
Memorial’s vigil takes place on Thursday, Dec. 6, at 6:30 p.m. in the Engineering Building, room EN-2006.
Free parking will be available in all lots marked 16 or 16A.
Meanwhile, in conjunction with this year’s vigil, a special evening of readings and music by members of the campus and wider community will take place following the event.
December monologues/dialogues takes place on the third floor of the University Centre at 8 p.m. in room UC-3017. It is sponsored by Women’s Resource Centre, the Women’s Studies Department, and the Sexual Harassment Office. Light refreshments will be served at the University Centre event.
Media agencies are encouraged to send representatives to this year’s ceremony.
