SUBJECT: Memorial University set to host competition for young science lovers

Junior high school science buffs have only a few more weeks to brush up on subjects ranging from math and physics to biology and astronomy for a unique event taking place next month on Memorial University’s St. John’s campus.
The All-Science Challenge is being organized by the Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program, one of the most active educational outreach groups at Memorial made up of graduate and undergraduate students.
Students in Grades 7, 8 and 9 from all across the province, are now being encouraged to sign-up for the one-day event, which is set for Saturday, May 10.
The first 12 schools to reply will be enrolled. Teams of four from each school will be chosen for the challenge, which will quiz them on their knowledge of science facts and test their application skills through fun hands-on activities.
“One team of four students per school will learn general scientific material that we provide in a guidebook, prior to the competition,” said Nichole Adams, a third-year kinesiology student at Memorial who is working with the Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program this year and helping co-ordinate the challenge.
“The subjects in the manual will include topics such as biology, chemistry, math, physics and astronomy, earth and environmental science, psychology and engineering. The students will then come to Memorial’s campus for the competition, which is a question-and-answer style format based on the guidebook information.”
The event will include prizes, medals for winners and participation certificates for all the students.
Ms. Adams said organizers are hoping for a strong contingent of budding scientists from all over the province to enroll.
“This is a great opportunity for students to enrich their knowledge of general science topics, showcase their hard work, win prizes, and participate in a fun educational event,” she said. “We hope students walk away with a sense of accomplishment after studying for months and putting what they have learned to work. We also hope that they look at science as something that can be very fun and interesting to study and learn.”
Memorial’s Let’s Talk Science Partnership Program has been active since 1996. It is one of 22 partnership program sites across Canada and is an educational science and outreach organization with a mission to improve science literacy through leadership, innovative educational programs, research and advocacy. The program partners educators with post-secondary science, engineering and technology students who conduct hands-on activities with youth across Canada.
Registration for Memorial University’s first-ever All-Science Challenge are currently being accepted.
