SUBJECT: Memorial University and Dalhousie to cooperate on Bachelor of Education

Memorial University and Dalhousie University have announced an important education partnership that will see Memorial’s Bachelor of Education degree offered at Dalhousie University beginning Spring, 2008.
In the first year of the program up to 60 students will be admitted. Officials on both campuses say that this is an exceptional program for the preparation of those who will teach in the intermediate and senior high school system. Graduates from this program will also be eligible for teacher certification in the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia.
This new arrangement is a four-semester consecutive program which will begin in May and continue to completion the following August. Students will be admitted to this program in teachable areas such as science, mathematics, social studies, and other areas.
“Dalhousie University wants to serve its students and benefit society,” says Dal’s vice president, academic, Alan Shaver. “Many of our students want to enter a B.Ed. program in Nova Scotia but they are unable to do so due to restricted capacity.”
“We have heard from dozens of would be teachers who would prefer to earn their education degree here in Halifax rather than relocate to Newfoundland or Maine,” adds Dalhousie’s Andrew Cochrane, dean, College of Continuing Education.
Memorial’s dean of education, Dr. Alice Collins says she welcomes this partnership and opportunity with Dalhousie. “We are very proud to work with our colleagues in Nova Scotia and we are committed to offering an exceptional program,” Dr. Collins said. “We look forward to other opportunities for collaboration with our colleagues at Dalhousie and with teachers in Nova Scotia. Working together in research and other scholarly activities will be beneficial and welcome,” she said.
The deadline for applications to this program is Friday, May 9. Prospective students should request an application package by phoning the College of Continuing Education at 494-6079 or 1-800-565-1179.
“We have been receiving many inquiries from students in the Maritime Provinces and we are very pleased to announce the implementation of the program,” Dr. Collins said.
