SUBJECT: Marine Institute employee wins award for student services

The Marine Institute has another reason to celebrate – Angie Clarke, placement officer, has been honoured with a national award.
The Student Affairs and Services Association (SASA) has selected Ms. Clarke as its winner of the 2008 New and Emerging Professionals Award. The official announcement will be made at the annual Canadian Association of College and University Student Services (CACUSS) Conference being held at Memorial University in St. John’s from June 22 - 25.
The new award won by Ms. Clarke encourages a professional who has been working in student affairs/services less than 5 years and acknowledges outstanding potential, while rewarding service and leadership in the profession early in one’s career. The recognition consists of a commemorative plaque and a cash award.
“As a new professional, I have been very fortunate over the last few years to be given the opportunity to do good work with really great people. Working at MI has allowed me to see the breadth and depth of Student Services. The outcome for me has been the realization that working in this field is something that I am passionate about. It is a field I hope to be involved in and actively contribute to for years to come,” said Ms. Clarke.
While Ms. Clarke is currently a Placement Officer filling a replacement position in the Placement Office, she has spent the last several years as the institute’s Student Liaison Officer. That role allowed her to deal directly with students, addressing a variety of issues from academics to ito student loans. She’s especially known for working with first year students as they adjust to post-secondary life and coordinating the faculty advisor program.
Her work with young people though goes beyond the Institute campus. Ms. Clarke is an active volunteer with the Rotary Readers, Canadian Cancer Society, Girl Guides of Canada and Allied Youth.
She is also a member of the Communications and Social committees organizing the upcoming CACUSS Conference. The Marine Institute will welcome over 600 delegates to campus on June 23 to enjoy an evening of food and entertainment as part of their Newfoundland and Labrador experience.
This is the second award for the Institute’s Student Affairs Office in recent years. In 2007, the MI’s Guidance/Student Affairs Officer, Gary Green, was honoured with the President’s Award of Exemplary Service.
