SUBJECT: Marine Institute awards spring scholarships

Thanks to the generosity of local and national businesses, organizations and individuals, 22 students will receive scholarships today at the Fisheries and Marine Institute’s Spring Scholarship and Awards presentation.
Memorial University’s Marine Institute awards scholarships twice a year to recognize the academic excellence and leadership demonstrated by its students. The scholarship program, coupled with the institute’s highly affordable tuition rate, offers a great reason for students to enroll in the Marine Institute’s wide range of degree, advanced diploma, diploma and certificate programs in the oceans, food and environmental sectors. The Marine Institute awards over $100,000 in scholarships annually.
Glenn Blackwood, executive director of the Marine Institute, stressed the value of the Marine Institute scholarship program. “Scholarships are not just a means of financing an education. It helps certainly, but it is a key element in ensuring that our students feel supported in their studies, encouraged to reach their career goals and challenged to be their best,” said Mr. Blackwood.
“We are very grateful for the support provided by our donors,” he added.
“They continue to recognize the critical need to provide student support and believe that fostering leadership in our students is the first step in creating a highly skilled and educated workforce.”
Mr. Blackwood was joined by Dr. Michael Collins, Memorial’s acting vice-president (academic), in congratulating the scholarship recipients.
Joan Burke, minister of education, represented at the presentation by Tom Hedderson, minister of intergovernmental affairs, also recognized the accomplishments of the Marine Institute students and the future opportunities that lay before them in this province.
“I offer my sincere congratulations to all the scholarship recipients whose academic performance merits these awards,” said Minister Burke. “We have top quality learning institutions like the Marine Institute and one of the best student aid packages in the country. We have new up-front, needs-based grants, reduced interest on loans by 2.5 per cent and committed to a tuition freeze. We want our young people to get educated, stay in Newfoundland and Labrador, and help grow our economy. Reducing student debt with scholarships and grants is an important part of achieving this goal, and I thank business and industry for supporting these awards.”
The Marine Institute is North America’s most comprehensive institute dedicated to education, training, applied research and industrial support for the oceans industries.
