Industry leaders from the marine transportation sector will hold a news conference to discuss the current career opportunities that exist within the marine and oil and gas sectors. The conference will take place in Hampton Hall at the Fisheries and Marine Institute on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008, at 9:15 a.m.
The panel, which will address the current global shortage of marine personnel, consists of Capt. Sid Hynes, executive chairman of Oceanex and president of Canship; Capt. Rick Strong, marine services manager, Seamanning Services Limited; Capt. Anthony Patterson, divisional master, Newfoundland and Labrador Division of Company of Master Mariners and Brooke Cameron, manager crewing, Algoma.
The official opening of the Marine Institute’s Annual Career Fair will follow the news conference as employers from across Canada will be choosing the best and brightest students for positions in the marine, oceans and food industries.
The Marine Institute (MI) has organized the annual fair since 2000 and this year’s fair will be the largest ever with over 40 exhibitors and presenters participating during the two-day event.
The fair showcases the knowledge and skills of MI students and graduates including those from nautical science, marine engineering, food technology, naval architecture, marine environment, aquaculture, ROV and ocean instrumentation and matches them with employers who are seeking new employees for their workforce
Feb. 6 will feature presentations from employers and MI alumni who are leaders in their respective fields.
Feb. 7 will see employers setting up displays and interacting with students and graduates from institute’s wide range of certificate, diploma, advanced diploma and degree programs.
The media and the general public are invited to attend.
