SUBJECT: Global cinema comes to Marine Institute

An eclectic array of international films are slated for a six-part film series at the Marine Institute beginning Jan.21, 2008. Initiated by the Division of Lifelong Learning and the Faculty of Arts at Memorial University, this is a unique opportunity to view multiple award-winning films from across the world and participate in discussions moderated by Memorial University professors with expertise in each film’s subject matter.
The series kicks off with Paradise Now, the winner of the 2005 Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film and the first Palestinian film to be nominated for an Academy Award (for best foreign language film). Directed by Hany Ab-Assad, the story depicts two close friends, Palestinians Said and Khaled, preparing for a suicide attack in Israel and the subsequent aftermath when the plan goes awry at the border. The winner of multiple awards from various international film festivals, Paradise Now is, according to Prof. Noreen Golfman, “the kind of film that people will like to reflect on and talk about, since it opens us up to questions not only about terrorism and the particular issues of the Middle East but also about strategies of filmmaking.”
Professor Golfman will be on hand on Jan. 21, to present Paradise Now and will lead the post-screening discussion.
Passes ($30) and single tickets ($6) can be purchased in advance through the Division of Lifelong Learning at 737-7979 or via e-mail at lifelong.learning@mun.ca. Films begin at 7 p.m. in Hampton Court at the Marine Institute on Ridge Road.
