SUBJECT: Botanical Garden hosts national kick-off for International Compost Awareness Week

The national launch of International Compost Awareness Week 2008 will take place at Memorial’s Botanical Garden this weekend. Susan Antler, executive director of the Composting Council of Canada, will join garden staff, volunteers, friends and the public as the Botanical Garden hosts its annual Three Cheers for Composting family program.
The main event will occur on Sunday, May 4, at 2 p.m. at the Botanical Garden, located at 306 Mount Scio Road. Family activities, nature hikes, games, and a special cake, all with a compost theme, will be offered. The garden will also be recognized for its involvement in compost week. Healthy snacks will be provided thanks to the assistance of The Wellness Coalition – Avalon East. Compost prizes and information have been generously provided by MMSB.
International Compost Awareness Week is a promotional and education initiative to showcase compost production and demonstrate compost use. It aims to encourage the public and business communities alike to take action to support composting at all levels and to use compost. Compost Awareness Week was first established in Canada by the Composting Council of Canada as a means to promote composting and compost use throughout the country. It is now being celebrated in the United Kingdom, the United States and Europe. MUN Botanical Garden has celebrated compost week and its annual seasonal opening in early May for many years.
