SUBJECT: Symposium will promote interprofessional health education and practice

Note to editors:
A one-day symposium in St. John’s on Oct. 23 will further advance interprofessional health education and practice in Newfoundland and Labrador. Learning Together-Working Together features a full day of discussion and brainstorming, including two plenary speakers from the University of British Columbia and the United Kingdom.
The symposium is sponsored by Memorial University’s Centre for Collaborative Health Professional Education and is part of a current project entitled “Collaborating for Education and Practice: An Interprofessional Education Strategy for Newfoundland and Labrador.” It takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Fairmount Newfoundland Hotel.
The day will bring together key stakeholders in health professional education from across Newfoundland and Labrador. Invited participants include representatives from university faculty and other teachers, student organizations, the regional health authorities, professional associations, the Departments of Education and Health and Community Services and members of the governing council and project steering committee of the Centre for Collaborative Health Professional Education.
Dr. John H.V. Gilbert, principal and professor emeritus of the College of Health Disciplines, University of British Columbia, is the plenary speaker for the morning session, which also features a panel discussion on interprofessional education and practice.
The afternoon discussion, Vision and Action Planning, will be facilitated by Dr. Marilyn Hammick, education and research consultant and chair of the UK Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education.
