SUBJECT: Sundays on Health Research offers public sessions on research into childhood nutrition, obesity and type 1 diabetes

`This Sunday the Faculty of Medicine at MemorialUniversity is hosting three related talks on research into childhood nutrition, obesity and type 1 diabetes. The talks take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the main auditorium of the Health Sciences Centre and feature researchers Drs. Leigh Anne Newhook, Barbara Roebothan, and Guang Sun. The session is free and open to the public, and free parking is available in Lot 9 off Clinch Ave.
Newfoundland and Labrador has the unhappy distinction of having one of the highest rates of type 1 diabetes, or juvenile diabetes in the world. Dr. Newhook is leading a research team studying this disease and she will discuss their findings.
The problem of overweight and obese children is also high in this province. Dr. Barbara Roebothan is a dietitian who is currently conducting nutrition research. Two of her projects are focusing on the childhood diet, a particularly relevant topic given the growing problem of overweight and obesity among our young people.
Dr. Guang Sun is well-known for his research on adult obesity in Newfoundland and Labrador. Recently he and pediatrician Dr. Tracy Bridger received funding from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) to conduct the first-ever detailed study into whether or not children in Newfoundland and Labrador are genetically predisposed to obesity. On Sunday he will discuss this research.
