SUBJECT: PSA: Cognitive Science Lecture Series: The Math Plague

DATE: September 26, 2006

For many years, Dr. Sherry Mantyka, director of Memorial’s Mathematics Learning Centre, has been identifying factors which contribute to under-achievement in mathematics of students entering the university. Faced with a pervasive problem she turned to Dr. Michael Rabinowitz, a cognitive psychologist, for assistance, and together they developed solutions to the math problems using cognitive psychology.
This noon-hour talk will outline the nature of the mathematical difficulties so many students face, and some of the solutions. 12–1 p.m., Arts and Administration Building, room A-1049, St. John’s campus, Memorial University.
