SUBJECT: Memorial University sponsors Science in the Mall 2006

DATE: October 19, 2006

Note to editors:
Eager young scientists are encouraged to visit the Avalon Mall in St. John’s this Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006, for a unique program that’s being co-ordinated by Memorial University’s Faculty of Science. Science in the Mall will include demonstrations, handouts, games, prizes and various other events geared towards showing the general public, particularly young children, that science not only plays a vital role in our lives but can also be fun.
Memorial’s Faculty of Science is committed to the support, promotion and popularization of science. Saturday’s event is just one of the many educational outreach events co-ordinated by Memorial. Participants can also take part in a fun event called Math Trial, a type of mathematical scavenger hunt, in which they roam the mall to answer mathematical questions. Science in the Mall runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and there is no cost to take part in the activities. Math in the Mall takes place in the area in front of the Gap clothing store.
Media agencies are encouraged to send representatives as there will be opportunities for photos and interviews with organizers and participants.
