SUBJECT: Memorial group hosts Public Education Symposium on blood disorders

Members of the general public are welcome to attend a general meeting and special forum being hosted by the Newfoundland and Labrador Blood Disorders Education Network on Thursday, May 31, 2007, from 7-9 p.m. The meeting will take place in the main auditorium of the Health Sciences Centre.
The network is a project of the Hematology and Hemostasis Research Group at Memorial University. Its main goal is to raise awareness about disorders of the blood and the immune system in Newfoundland and Labrador, as well as the impact these disorders have on patients, their families and the professionals and volunteers who work in this field.
The meeting will include special presentations by Dr. Lucinda Whitman, an associate professor of medicine and laboratory medicine (hematology) in Memorial’s Faculty of Medicine who is also the divisional chief, laboratory medicine, with Hematology at Eastern Health, and Marilyn Collins, advanced registered technologist program manager with the Newfoundland and Labrador Provincial Blood Co-ordinating Program. They will deliver a talk entitled What you need to know about blood transfusions – A user’s guide.
 A second presentation entitled Anxiety and Depression will be delivered by Dr. Coleen Walsh, who is a clinical assistant professor in Memorial’s Discipline of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine and is also the psychiatrist and consultation liaison at Eastern Health.
