SUBJECT: Grenfell - Grenfell College to host mini-forum on oceans observation

Sir Wilfred Grenfell College, in collaboration with the Institute of Biodiversity and Ecosystems Science, will host a mini-forum on oceans observation and related research on Thursday, March 15.
"This may be a significant emerging opportunity for research and development at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College," said Dr. John Ashton, principal of Grenfell College. 
The event, which will take place at 7 p.m. in AS328, will feature Dr. Ken Whelan, executive director of the Marine Institute of Ireland and Dr. Leslie O'Reilly, a former director of Memorial University’s Marine Institute. 
 
Biographies
Dr. Ken Whelan is executive director of the Marine Institute of Ireland, based at the Institute’s field station in Clew Bay, County Mayo, on the west coast of Ireland. He serves as an adviser to the Irish Department of Communication, Marine and Natural Resources on a broad range of policy areas related to fin fish aquaculture, freshwater fisheries, the freshwater environment and fish habitat. He is currently president of the North Atlantic Salmon Conservation Organization. In addition to being one of Europe’s pre-eminent fisheries scientists, Dr. Whelan is a keen angler and his book The Angler in Ireland: Game, Coarse and Sea is considered among the definitive works on the Irish sports fisheries. Dr. Whelan will give a presentation entitled Bradan sa Farraige: At Sea with the Salmon.
Leslie O’Reilly is a former director of Memorial University’s Marine Institute. He is currently executive director of Oceans Advance Inc., which is described as an “ocean technology cluster development forum,” involving key stakeholders from the ocean industries, all levels of government and the academic community. Ocean’s Advance is currently spearheading the development of a North Atlantic oceans observation network and he will provide a brief presentation on this initiative and reference ways in which western Newfoundland and particularly Grenfell College might contribute to and benefit from it. His presentation will be notionally entitled Oceans Advance and the North West Oceans Observatory System.
