SUBJECT: Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Newfoundland and Labrador is now accepting applications for the 2006 Student Summer Employment Program (SSEP)

DATE: May 2, 2006

The WISE, student summer employment program (SSEP) offers paid research positions to Level 2 female students across Newfoundland and Labrador. These positions are for eight weeks and will be offered at Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Corner Brook, and surrounding areas.
WISE SSEP, now in its 17th year, has given more than 500 students the opportunity to experience jobs in scientific professions including chemistry, engineering, marine biology, medicine, and technology. The program demonstrates to young women that careers in science and engineering are exciting, rewarding and accessible. In 2005, student participants expressed their excitement and satisfaction in the post summer evaluation:
“I will take this experience with me for the rest of my life.”
“The tours, buddy system and WISE functions were amazing! The tours allowed me to see different places where I could possibly work if I choose a career in science and engineering, the buddy system allowed me to see the work some of the other girls were doing and the functions were inspiring and fun!”
“I loved WISE 2005. I toured many workplaces meeting inspiring women, who definitely evoked interest in these science related fields."
Application packages have been sent to all high schools throughout the province. Students should speak to their Level 2 Math or Science teacher or guidance counsellor if they are interested in finding out more information or they can visit www.cdli.ca/wise/ssep/. The application deadline is May 12, 2006.
