SUBJECT: SWGC: Theatre Department presents By the Bog of Cats

DATE: March 31, 2006

CORNER BROOK - The Theatre Program at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College,
Memorial University, is pleased to announce By the Bog of Cats by Irish
playwright Marina Carr as its final production of the season, featuring
the graduating class of 2006.

Each winter, the fourth-year theatre class at the college travels to
Memorial's Harlow Campus in England. While there, our students
experience the very best of British (and international) theatre, visit
London's many world-class museums and exhibits, and study under some of
the country's best actors and theatre technicians. And, of course, the
students rehearse the "Harlow show", their final production as students
of the theatre program. This is an important occasion for us all, and
marks the end of four years of intense training and study. We are always
proud of the accomplishments of our students and this year is certainly
no different as they begin to make the transition into the next phase of
their personal and professional lives.

By the Bog of Cats tells the story of Irish Traveler Hester Swane who
has come to turn her back on her gypsy roots by settling on the edge of
a dark bog in the vain hope that her mother, who abandoned her 30 years
before, will come back to claim her. In the time that has passed, Hester
has had to deal with raising her own daughter, fighting for her place in
a community that has never truly come to accept her and the terrible
secret that hangs over her. As the play opens, Hester discovers that one
of the bog's strange familiars, a black swan, has died in the night; it
is this bleak omen that sets the tone for the eventful day to follow, in
which the whole town must come to grips with its own mortality and
responsibilities.

Loosely based on the Medea story, By the Bog of Cats is a touching,
harrowing and altogether honest look at a mother, family and community
struggling to survive its own dark secrets.

By the Bog of Cats features the fourth-year students of the theatre
program with special guests Ken Jacobsen and Robert Wyatt Thorne. Under
the direction of Todd Hennessey, chair of the theatre program, the
production features the set and costume design of faculty member roy
Hansen-robitschek and lighting design of the program's technical
director, Jim Chalmers-Gow.

By the Bog of Cats runs April 5 to April 8 at 8 p.m. Tickets are
available at the Grenfell College Bookstore or at the box office on the
evening of each performance. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for
students and seniors.
