News Release

REF NO.: 350

SUBJECT: Orientation welcomes new faces to Memorial

DATE: August 30, 2006

New students attending Memorial University this fall are gearing up for the official start of classes on Wednesday, Sept. 6.  But before classes start, students have an opportunity to participate in Orientation, taking place on Monday, Sept. 4, and Tuesday, Sept. 5.

This year’s theme is “become __________ (fill in the blank)”, a series of events that help students make the transition to a new academic environment.

This two-day event is the largest, most high-energy event at Memorial and is designed to allow students to become familiar with their new surroundings, interact with new friends and have fun.

“Orientation is all about the possibilities open to new students” says Olivia Heaney, this year’s student co-ordinator. “There is no doubt it will be the best Orientation ever. All the sessions are about providing the foundation for new students’ social and intellectual growth by allowing them to make meaningful connections with people and ideas.”

With two days of fun-filled events, interactive sessions are designed to balance information and fun.  Some of the traditional events are on the agenda again this year, including the welcome luncheon, a money matters session and faculty meetings.  New events this year include an athletic event with the Memorial Sea-Hawks and a surprise event at the Rogers Breezeway.

Memorial University has a diverse student community and Orientation offers sessions designed for first-year students, transfer students, international students and mature students.

Also again this year, a Parents Orientation is scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 3, and Monday, Sept. 4.  Parents can choose from one of two days, whichever day is more convenient.  Parents Orientation is open to all parents of any new student to Memorial.  The event runs from to and there will be an information fair from to on both days.

Registration for Orientation takes place between 12 and on Monday, Sept. 4, in the Field House.
