SUBJECT: Memorial University business students continue their reign at the Intercollegiate Business Competition at Queen's University

Undergraduate students from Memorial's Faculty of Business Administration wore a path to the podium at the awards ceremony for the 28th annual Intercollegiate Business Competition held at Queen's University last week. Each of the four teams from Memorial placed second in their division, earning the university a second place overall finish. In addition, Memorial won the Chairperson's Trophy for the team best combining professionalism and spirit.
"As our students went to the podium to receive the Chairperson's Award, they immediately received a standing ovation and the audience began chanting the name Memorial," said business professor Dr. Alex Faseruk, who coached the team. "I wish that more people could see the tremendous admiration and respect that is given to our students when they compete in these events. It is respect they earn over and over again through their outstanding professionalism, competency and friendliness at these competitions." This represents the third time that Memorial has received the Chairpersons Award.
Memorial's team consisted of bachelor of commerce (co-operative) students Stephanie Daley (Goulds), Mark Battcock (Mount Pearl), and Ashley Wakeham (Goulds) in the Business Policy Division; James Farrell and Colin Heffernan (both from Goulds) in the Debating Division; Michael Dyke (Clarenville) and Karyn Lewis (Conception Harbour) in the Labour Arbitration Division; and Nicholas Lane and Josh Quinton (both from St. John's) in the MIS division. The teams were coached by Dr. Alex Faseruk and Heather Skanes.
Memorial's preparation for ICBCbegan months ago. In the preliminary round held last fall, Memorial was one of 28 universities that entered teams in the business case competition. From there, teams from 20 universities qualified for the final round held at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario. Thirteen universities earned medals in the final round of the competition with many of them earning only one, including well-known universities Queen's, Western, McGill and UBC. With four medals to their credit, Memorial finished second to Universityof Calgary's Haskayne School of Business, which earned seven medals.
While the students are back to their regular schedules today, some of them already have their sights set on next year's competition. "Our debating team may well go to the finals again in future years," added Dr. Faseruk. "Both James and Colin are in the early stages of their programs. Also, Josh Quinton, who will graduate in May 2007 will, in all likelihood, compete next year."
Memorial has been competing at ICBC since 1982 and has won 54 medals in this competition (15 Gold, 18 Silver and 21 Bronze) to date. In the history of the competition, Memorial is ranked third overall behind Calgary and Queen's.
