CORNER BROOK – Those interested in pine marten will want to attend a public talk by Dr. Peter Turner at Grenfell College.
nbsp;Dr. Turner is visiting Grenfell College, Memorial University’s Corner Brook campus, this week from the Waterford Institute of Technology in Ireland. As part of the growing research link under an MOU between Grenfell College and the Waterford Institute of Technology, as well as research links with the Corner Brook office of the Canadian Forest Service, NRCan, Dr. Peter Turner will present a talk to the Humber Natural History Society. The talk, titled Ecology of Pine Marten, will be held on Tuesday, June 20, 7:30 p.m., in AS375 of Grenfell College. Though it is a Humber Natural History Society event, the public is welcome to attend as well.
Dr. Peter Turner is a founding member of the molecular ecology research group at the Waterford Institute of Technology, Ireland. The group was established in 2000 within the Department of Chemical and Life Sciences, to advance the department’s research agenda in applied and basic research. One area of Dr. Turner’s work is the application of forensic DNA testing to wild mammals, in particular pine marten. The pine marten (Martes martes) is Ireland’s most elusive mammal and is a member of the family Mustelidae, which in Ireland also includes the otter, stoat, badger and the introduced American mink.
Sir Wilfred Grenfell College and Natural Resources Canada will welcome Dr. Turner and those in attendance with a reception following the presentation.
