SUBJECT: Disdain for science is wrong-headed, philosopher to argue

There is a tendency among postmodernist thinkers to distrust and even disdain science as a cold, inherently capitalistic force that objectifies the world and does not serve humanity, says Darren Hynes, Department of Philosophy at Memorial University. In a public lecture, he will try to defend science in a world that doesn’t have much fondness for it. “I will argue that we shouldn’t reject science out of hand or fight against it. There are competing notions of science and its role, and some can work well with philosophy and with social justice.”
Dr. Hynes will speak on Science and the Postmodern World as part of the St. John’s Public Lectures in Philosophy series, held Tuesday, Jan. 31, at The Ship Pub on Duckworth Street from 8:30-10 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
