Students who have proven their leadership skills will have a chance to shine at this weekend’s Leader Forum, a day-long event developed to recognize and encourage student leadership on campus. The Leader Forum will be held on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 9:30 a.m.to 6 p.m.and is part of the Celebrate Memorial 2004 festivities. Registration for the event will be held at 9:30 a.m. in room S-2109 of the Science building on Memorial’s St. John’s campus.
Students must be nominated to participate in the Leader Forum. Nominees are expected to be undergraduate students who are interested in developing their communication, teamwork and leadership skills in school, work and the community. The Leader Forum is an initiative of the office of Student Affairs and Services. The goal of the day-long event is to provide a training session filled with interesting and interactive components that are built on practical experiences and leadership theory. Ample opportunity is given for students to meet fellow student leaders and discuss various issues that are pertinent to the leadership experience on Memorial’s campus.
“This year’s theme, Leaders of Tomorrow, Today, focuses on the importance of creativity and motivation and its impact on the future. Although one goal of the event is to recognize current leaders, it will also provide students with inspirational speakers and training to complement their abilities,” said Dana Parsons, student leadership program coordinator.
Last year, over 100 students participated and that number is expected to grow this year. The schedule of events includes an introduction to service learning, a leadership training module and a session with guest speaker Matt Hickman, president and owner of KPS group of companies. The event will conclude with a reception and the presentation of certificates by Dr. Lilly Walker, dean of Student Affairs and Services, and Memorial University president, Dr. Axel Meisen.
Celebrate Memorial is an annual celebration of Memorial’s connection to the community. What began in 1999 with the Festival of Anniversaries, highlighting Memorial’s 50th anniversary as a degree-granting institution, has today become a celebration of the contributions that Memorial’s students, faculty, staff and alumni make to Newfoundland and Labrador.
