SUBJECT: National award for teaching goes to Memorial professor

Dr. DaveSchneider, professor at the Ocean Sciences Centre and associate dean of science (research), has been awarded the 2005 Northeastern Association of Graduate Schools (NAGS) Graduate Faculty Teaching Award. This prestigious award is given to a teacher of graduate students. The recipient is selected from 125 American and 14 Canadian universities. The award recognizes excellence and creativity in the teaching of graduate students. Dr. Schneider will be presented with the award at the annual general meeting to be held at YaleUniversityin April 2005.
Dr. Schneider joined the Newfoundland Institute for Cold Ocean Science (NICOS) at Memorial in 1984 as a post-doctoral fellow in marine ornithology. He holds a B.Sc. from DukeUniversityand a PhD from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Prior to joining Memorial, he held research positions at the Universityof Californiaat Irvine, the Manomet Bird Observatory, Manomet, Massachusetts, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, Balboa, Panama. In 1987, he was appointed as Assistant Professor (Research) within NICOS and in 1988 he was cross-appointed to the Department of Biology.
Since his initial appointment, his research has begun to focus more upon quantitative ecology and the use of statistical analysis and mathematical modeling in the study of fisheries oceanography.
In 2003, Dr. Schneider was appointed Associate Deanof Science (Research) at MemorialUniversity. He is the author of close to 100 refereed journal, review and encyclopedia articles, book chapters and books, and he has successfully supervised to the completion of their degrees, 13 B.Sc. (honours), 11 M.Sc. and 4 PhD students. Although highly regarded for his research, Dr. Schneider is also an outstanding teacher as shown by the NAGS award for his teaching effectiveness.
