SUBJECT: MemorialUniversitypresents Images of the Elastic Earth

DATE: March 23, 2005

Memorial University presents the lecture Images of the Elastic Earth by Dr. R. Phillip Bording, Husky Energy Chair in Oil and Gas Research, on Wednesday, March 30, at 7:30 p.m.in the Reid Theatre, Arts and Administration Building, Elizabeth Avenue.

Man has unravelled the mystery of the Earth’s surface over the centuries, leaving the interior as a vast unknown. In his talk and with the help of performance artists, Dr. Bording will explore this three-dimensional interior with elastic waves and demonstrate the power of our modern science and that of computational geophysics. Like ultrasound images of the body, our seismic images of the Earth allow us to explore without the knife, the shovel, or the drill bit. Through this lecture, Dr. Bording will tour the Grand Banks for their immense deposits of natural gas and oil.

Prior to accepting his appointment as Husky Chair, Dr. Bording was manager of Computational Science at the Computer Sciences Corporation in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Bording received his MS in Computer Science from the University of Alabama in Huntsville and his PhD from the University of Tulsa.

Dr. Bording also previously held the position of research geophysicist for Petroleum Geo Services in Houston and as code migration manager for Nichols Research/IBM. He held a Naval Research Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Texas, Institute for Geophysics and a MUSIC Postdoctoral Fellow at Memorial.

Dr. Bording's current research interests include seismic processing algorithms for reservoir characterization, seismic modeling, and migration, inverse methods for parameter estimation and joint inversion of data, application specific computing for seismic algorithms and visualization of seismic processes.

He has also authored and co-authored a number of publications including: Seismic Modeling and Imaging with the Complete Wave Equation, Seismic Modeling and Earth Imaging, Computational Science Education Project (the pioneering Web e-book) and Applications of Seismic Travel-Time Tomography: Geophysical Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The lecture is open to the public. Parking is available in Lot15. A reception will follow. Media agencies are encouraged to send representatives.
