SUBJECT: Memorial to host sexual harassment conference

MemorialUniversitywill host the 20th annual conference of the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education. The national conference is titled Changing the Human Rights Landscape: Strategies for Preventing Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education and Beyond and will be held from Oct. 25-28, 2004, at the Fairmont Hotel in St. John’s. The conference will address the ongoing quest for dignity at university campuses and in the workplace and examine the following questions: How can discrimination and harassment be prevented? How can these problems be strategically eradicated to create campuses and workplaces that are truly inclusive and safe?

Highlights of the conference include a discussion from Dr. Arjun Aggarwal, Canada’s leading expert on sexual harassment, on his latest book Sexual Harassment Investigations: How to Limit your Liability and More. The conference is open to all faculty, students and staff of MemorialUniversitywho are committed to creating harassment-free environments, as well as counterparts in business, unions and government.

Memorial’s Sexual Harassment Office will also sponsor a public talk from Dr. Christopher Kilmartin, professor of psychology at Mary Washington College in Virginia, as part of the Celebrate Memorial 2004 festivities. The talk is titled Myths of Masculinity: Historical, Cultural and Social Contexts and will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 26, in Room AA-1043, located in the Arts and Administration building on Memorial’s St. John’s campus.

Celebrate Memorial is an annual celebration of Memorial’s connection to the community. What began in 1999 with the Festival of Anniversaries, highlighting Memorial’s 50th anniversary as a degree-granting institution, has today become a celebration of the contributions that Memorial’s students, faculty, staff and alumni make to Newfoundland and Labrador.
