Our Alumni, Who They are and What They are Doing

Hello, my name is Ann Blackmore. I am a Commercial Advisor at Chevron Canada, as well as an Instructor of Economics at Memorial University of Newfoundland. I have taught economics at MUN for over 10 years, primarily focusing on introducing students to all that economics has to offer. I personally attended MUN from 1996 - 2003, achieving a Bachelor of Commerce (Co-op) Honours and a Bachelor of Arts (Economics) and then following up with a Masters in Economics. I was originally enrolled in just the Business Faculty but after taking a few Economics courses and really enjoying them, I decided to do the two undergraduate degrees simultaneously. I have had a very fulfilling career thus far, and one of the most enjoyable parts has been helping shape the minds of Newfoundland's future generation.

I have had a varied career. I began at the Finance Department of Memorial University, and then moved on to Newfoundland and Labrador Regional Economic Development Association. From there I was offered a position at Newfoundland Power as an Economist. Primarily I was focused on the provincial rates cases. I then accepted a position as a Commercial Analyst at Chevron Canada with the help of a recommendation from Dr. Locke. I have since moved up to the position of Commercial Advisor. My day to day includes large negotiations on behalf of Chevron, developing analytical models for key business activities and operational management of the transportation and transshipment of Chevron crude.

My career has allowed me, at many levels, to affect the day to day lives of Newfoundlanders. From educating thousands of youth in the world in both macro and microeconomics, to helping set the power rates of the province, to being an integral part of the largest transportation and transshipment agreement in Atlantic Canada (long term, multi-party suite of agreements) – helping to ensure Newfoundland will have a strong oil economy for years to come through invaluable partnerships.

My memories from my time at Memorial are some of the best of my life. While the captain of a varsity sports team, I completed two undergraduate degrees, held two part-time jobs, and completed a Masters of Economics. I cannot say enough about how supportive both faculties were. I would like to personally thank Dr. Locke, Dr. Wernerheim, Mr. Lynch, Dr. May and Dr. Tsoa for all their interest and help, both during my time at MUN and afterwards as I entered the workforce.

My economics education was very interesting and has offered me a wealth of both knowledge and opportunities. The education I received at Memorial University's Department of Economics has had a significant and positive impact on my life!
