Overview of Annual Time Commitment for Members of the Board of Regents

The Board of Regents plays an important role in providing oversight to the management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of Memorial University.

This requires significant time commitment on a volunteer basis from those who serve as Regents.

Estimated Time Commitment

(per year)

Activity

25 hours

Regular Meetings of the Board of Regents occur 5 times a year and typically take 4-5 hours. In-person attendance is strongly preferred.

10 hours

Board Education occurs in various formats including sessions held in conjunction with regular meetings as well as ones that occur independent of the meeting cycle. These average approximately 2 hours per session.

15 hours

Committee Meetings occur in advance of each Regular Meeting. Each Regent is expected to serve on at least one committee. Committee meetings average approximately 2 to 3 hours per meeting and there are five regular committee meetings each year.

30 hours

Preparation time for Regular and Committee Meetings. Each Regent is expected to review materials and arrive at their meeting prepared to have thoughtful discussions, ask appropriate questions and make informed decisions. For Committee Meetings preparation time averages 2-3 hours, while preparation for Regular Meetings averages 2-3 hours

In addition to the approximately 80 hours of time for regular meetings, Regents may, occasionally, be called on for emergent business between regularly scheduled meetings. Estimates of this type of time commitment are not possible in advance. While emergent meetings are not the typical practice, they do occur.

The estimated time commitment is calculated for a Board member who does not hold a leadership role (for example as a Committee Chair) and serves on a single committee (the minimum commitment required).
