Destitute Work Permit

International students who have become destitute can apply for a Destitute Student Work Permit that will allow them to work full time for a semester. Being destitute means you are no longer able to support yourself financially as a result of circumstances beyond your control thus making it difficult to complete your term of study. Such circumstances could include:

  • Economic crisis in your home country
  • Natural disaster in your home country
  • Change in financial situation of individual you are dependent on that is beyond their control

In order to apply for this work permit, you must show proof that you are not able to obtain the money needed for daily expenses and that it is a temporary situation. There is no cost associated with making an application. Applications are made to the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) Case Processing Centre in Vegreville, Alberta. For instructions on how to apply and links to application forms, visit the CIC website.
