News/Advisories

On Wednesday October 15, 2025, from 12:01AM to 2:00AM the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) will be carrying out maintenance on Memorial’s VoIP telephone systems servicing the St. John’s and Signal Hill campuses, off campus sites in the St. John’s area, and Faculty of Nursing sites in Gander, Grand Falls-Windsor, and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. This work will not affect telephone services at the Marine Institute, Grenfell campus, Labrador campus, or Harlow campus. As a result, there will be a reboot of VoIP telephones and/or loss of call history on VoIP telephones. For questions regarding this maintenance please contact the OCIO Service Desk at 709-864-4595, help@mun.ca or chat support.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) will be implementing an update to Memorial’s Exchange email environment. This change is expected to be largely non-disruptive to end users, but some people may experience intermittent outages while the upgrade is in progress.

As part of our ongoing efforts to modernize and secure Memorial’s IT infrastructure, the Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) is pleased to announce the implementation of Microsoft Intune - third-party application patching.

By enabling patching both on and off the Memorial network, we’re improving security and ensuring devices remain up to date regardless of location. This enhancement builds on our recent transition from SCCM to Intune for Windows workstation patching and will now extend to commonly used third-party applications such as:

  • Adobe Reader
  • Google Chrome
  • Mozilla Firefox
  • 7-Zip
  • and others

 What this means for you

  • Automated updates: Third-party applications will now be updated automatically on Memorial-managed devices using Intune’s application management.
  • Improved security: Regular patching helps reduce vulnerabilities and improves overall system security.
  • Minimal Disruption: Updates will be deployed silently in the background, with minimal impact on your daily work.

What you need to do

To ensure your device receives updates:

  1. Your device will need to be powered on and connected to the internet to update. If your device is not connected to the internet during the scheduled update window, the update will be applied the next time it is powered on and connected.
  2. Report any issues to the OCIO Service Desk.

What you might see

To ensure that files aren’t in use during the update process, you may be prompted to save your work and close the application before the update can proceed.

Please refer to the image below for an example of the prompt you may receive.
