About Us

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) articulates the vision of information governance at Memorial, and advises on IT priorities.

The position reports jointly to the Provost and to the Vice-President (Administration & Finance), reflecting Memorial’s commitment to the academic and administrative components of its mandate.

The Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) promotes and supports an environment across the entire Memorial University system that enables students, faculty and researchers to access and utilize technology, data and information to generate knowledge and contribute to it in ways that benefit the university, and the community as a whole. The OCIO also aims to ensure that administrative systems and processes which support the university are maximized through the collaborative and effective use of technology and information management best practice.

The CIO’s mandate encompasses the following:

  • The management of information including articulating policies, procedures and standards for data classification; for management of all forms of information and records; and for electronic security.
  • The CIO will develop and consolidate a collective vision for an IT strategy for the University that supports consultation and transparent governance and revisited regularly.
  • The CIO will advise in the allocation and disbursement of resources.
  • The CIO is responsible for researching best practices and emerging technologies, and completing environmental scans.
  • The CIO will not be responsible for the daily operational delivery of IT services.
  • The CIO will be responsible for the Information Access and Privacy (IAP) Office.
