Leadership roles

President and vice-chancellor

The president and vice-chancellor is the university’s chief executive officer, responsible to the Board of Regents and to the Senate for the direction of MUN’s academic and administrative endeavours. The president is an ex officio member of the Board of Regents and serves as chair of the Senate. The president also leads Memorial’s external relations/advancement team.

From academics to research, our senior administration team provides leadership in shaping Memorial’s strategic direction. Vice-Presidents are responsible to the president and, under the chairmanship of the provost as the chief operating officer, they comprise the Vice-Presidents Council (VPC), the operational decision-making body of the university.

Vice-Presidents Council

The Vice-Presidents Council is the senior administrative committee of the university. It is a decision-making body with responsibility for pan-university operations and affairs, for matters that cross over vice-presidential portfolios, and for making recommendations to the president on matters within his or her sole authority.

Associate vice-presidents

Responsible to senior administration, associate vice-presidents oversee the operations of the university as established by the VPC and university’s frameworks and guiding plans.

Directly responsible to the provost/vice-president (academic), the dean of each faculty or school is responsible for the recruitment and promotion of the faculty, in accordance with the policies and procedures of the university.

Department heads/discipline chairs

The head is the chair of a department or section within a faculty or school. Responsible to a dean, a head oversees the day-to-day operation of the department/discipline and ensures it achieves the highest possible standards of excellence.
