New Faculty Profile

Jonathan (Jon) Clapperton, specializes in comparative Aboriginal history, notably of Aboriginal peoples and the environment, as well as the politics of historical representation in museums and interpretive centres. He comes to MUN after two years as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Alberta. His current research project, entitled “Decolonizing ‘Green’ : Environmental Activism and the Resurgence of Aboriginal Resource Management in the Pacific Northwest,” examines Aboriginal ecological management, resource development and environmental activism in British Columbia, Alberta and Washington State, since the 1960s. His doctoral dissertation, completed at the University of Saskatchewan under the supervision of Prof. Keith Thor Carlson, analyzed the history of Aboriginal peoples and environmentalism since the late nineteenth century. He also has served as an expert witness for numerous First Nation, Métis and Native American communities on issues relating to treaty rights, land claims and resource development, such as the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion.
