New Book Published

Jeff Webb’s most recent book has just been published by the University of Toronto Press. Observing the Outports is a history of the study of Newfoundland society and culture in 35 years after confederation. The first comprehensive study of interdisciplinary scholarship at Memorial University, it captures a vibrant time in the humanities and social sciences. Lexicographers, folklorists, historians, anthropologists, and others, documented the province as it underwent modernization. Webb argues that the Newfoundland Studies Movement paralleled the cultural revival of the period. Based upon oral interviews, archival research, and reading publications in a range of fields, the book contributes to the history of the province as well as the history of the social sciences.
