Programs
The Department of Economics offers a variety of undergraduate programs that provide you with the flexibility to tailor your learning to your own interests and ambitions and explore specific topics within the field.
Students may pursue either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science in economics, with both major and honours options available. Our co-operative education option offers work experience to help you build your professional networks and develop applied skills. A minor in economics is also available for students in other disciplines who would like to complement their primary area of study with valuable, marketable skills for the labour market.
Arts or Science?
The Bachelor of Arts emphasizes social, political, and institutional context of economic issues, integrating courses from the humanities and social sciences. In contrast, the Bachelor of Science places greater focus on quantitative analysis, mathematics, and statistical methods, requiring more coursework in the science fields.
Students interested in public policy, law, or interdisciplinary areas may prefer the Bachelor of Arts for its flexibility and wider range of electives, while those planning to pursue graduate studies in economics, data analytics, or technical careers may opt for the Bachelor of Science to develop stronger analytical and modelling skills. The honours program is strongly recommended for students considering graduate school who are not completing a joint major.
The choice between the two programs depends on your academic strengths, interests, and long-term goals. You are encouraged to contact the Director of Undergraduate Programs if you would like to talk more about which programs is right for you.
