For Students

This program option is forthcoming. We anticipate admitting the first cohort of students to the internship option in Fall 2026.

The Economics Co-operative Internship Option is designed to be completed in as little as 12 months, integrating classroom and experiential learning to fast-track your journey to a rewarding career.

The program begins with two semesters of coursework, providing you with theoretical and empirical foundations to succeed in the workplace. This training prepares you for diverse careers in leading private sector firms, government agencies and the not-for-profit sector. Emphasis is on technical skills needed to challenge conventional ways of thinking and support evidence-based decision-making.

Then, in the final semester, you have the opportunity to put your classroom learning to the test while gaining valuable work experience through a Co-operative Internship.

Program Requirements

You must complete a minimum of 26 credit hours in 6000-level courses in the Department of Economics, of which 11 credit hours must be attained from:

  • ECON 6000 Microeconomic Theory.
  • ECON 6001 Macroeconomic Theory.
  • ECON 6002 Econometrics.
  • ECON 6003 Mathematics for Economists.

In the first semester of the program, you are expected to complete ECON 6000, 6001, 6002 and 6003. These courses are prerequisites for all graduate courses that follow, unless waived in writing by the Head of the Department. The granting of a prerequisite waiver occurs only in extenuating and duly authenticated circumstances. You also begin work with the Co-operative Education Office to prepare for your internship job searches.

In the second semester, you are expected to complete 12 credit hours among the elective courses offered by the Department of Economics at the 6000-level. During this time, you also continue work with the Co-operative Education Office to secure an internship that begins in the next semester.

In the third semester, you register for ECON 699W for 3 credit hours and begin a work term in a position that has been approved by the Co-operative Education Office. Internships are normally paid. You also submit a series of assignments during the work term and receive a grade at the end based on their cumulative performance on the assignments and your work term performance. In the event that you do not secure a Co-operative Internship after completing a job search, you simply change to the Essay Option so that you still complete your program within one year.
