SSHRC Insight Development Grant Winner

July 17, 2025

Congratulations Dr. Blair Long, Assistant Professor of Economics, on being awarded an Insight Development Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council.

Insight Development Grants provide funding for early-stage research projects, helping researchers explore new questions, methods, and theoretical frameworks.

The grant has been awarded for his project, "Local Courts, Factor Flows, and Economic Development." The grant is valued at $48,693 for two years.

Congratulations to our alumnus Marco Gabriel Barreto Souza (MA Economics, 2023) on starting in this new role as Investment Analyst, Private Markets with the Teachers' Pension Plan Corporation!

Prior to taking on this new role, Gabriel worked with the Accelerated Growth Division of the Department of Industry, Energy and Technology, Government of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Congratulations, Michael

July 12, 2025

Congratulations to our alumnus Michael R. Sullivan (BSc Economics and Mathematics, 2016) on starting a new position as Assistant Professor at the prestigious Strategy and Business Economics Division of the Sauder School of Business, University of British Columbia.

Before joining UBC, Michael was a post-doctoral fellow at Harvard Business School and an Assistant Professor at the University of Western Ontario. He received his Ph.D. in economics from Yale University in 2023.

Marzaan Mirza is a recent alumnus of our Bachelor of Arts in Economics (co-op) program.

Having just graduated from our program, Marzaan now joins the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador as an Audit and Integrity Analyst.

China Economist Society

We wish Dr. Tony Fang, Professor of Economics and Stephen Jarislowsky Chair, safe travels in July as he heads to the China Economist Society annual conference at Sun Yat-sen University!

The China Economist Society is a non-profit academic organization registered in the United States. The aim of the Society is to promote scholarly exchanges among its members and contribute to the advancement and dissemination of economics and management sciences in China. Over the years, more than two thousand individuals have joined the CES from universities, research institutes, and other organizations from all over the world. 

Dr. Fang is attending this event in his renowned capacity as the Past President of the China Economist Society.

Dr. Fang, Professor of Economics and Stephen Jarislowsky Chair, has been awarded a prestigious Insight Grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

The grant has been awarded for his project, "Estimating the Labour Market Impacts of the Temporary Foreign Worker Program in Canada." The grant is valued at $238,640 for three years.

This grant comes at an important time when Newfoundland and Labrador and Canada has been struggling with immigration challenges, labour shortages and limited housing for newcomers.

 

Dr. Fang Comments on Issues Facing the Trades Industry in NL

Dr. Tony Fang, Professor of Economics and Stephen Jarislowsly Chair, was interviewed by CBC this week to discuss issues facing the trades industry in Newfoundland and Labrador.

He describes the winner's curse. "A high school student might drop out, pick up those jobs when they're coming through. But when we run out of those resources, what are they going to do?"

New Report on Improving Diversity in the Construction Industry

June 18, 2025

The summary report for Lynn Gambin’s ongoing project with community partner Stanley Oliver at Trades NL Indigenous Skilled Trades Office is available on the Harris Centre website.

The project “Improving Diversity in the Construction Trades” has been funded through the West White Rose Employment Diversity Research Fund, administered by the Memorial University Harris Centre.

The study is focused on recruitment and retention of Indigenous people in construction in the province, aiming to identify potential collaborative action among employers, governments, unions, and Indigenous communities to create a more inclusive and sustainable construction workforce. The report focuses on identifying barriers and proposing actionable recommendations.

Pro Vice Chancellor's Prize

June 6, 2025

Congratulations to Dawn McDonald (BSc Economics, Honours) on being a recipient of the Pro Vice Chancellor's Prize for outstanding research essay completed during coursework in the Winter 2025 Semester.

Dawn's essay, titled How the Pricing of Carbon in Canada Affects Households' Greenhouse Gas Emissions, has real-world application as the Government of Canada recently removed the consumer carbon tax and grapples with new ways to meet emission reduction targets.
